When to Replace Your Orthotics (Most People Wait Too Long)

July 17, 2025 by Michael Duvdevani Leave a Comment

Orthotics aren’t meant to last forever—but most people don’t realize that until their foot pain comes back. If your custom orthotics used to feel great but now seem less effective, they may be worn out. At Complete Feet, we regularly see patients who are long overdue for a replacement—and their feet are paying the price.

Here’s how to tell if it’s time to replace your orthotics.

How Long Do Orthotics Last?

On average, custom orthotics last about 1 to 2 years, depending on:

  • How often you wear them

  • Your activity level

  • Your body weight and foot structure

  • The type of footwear you use them in

Even high-quality orthotics gradually break down from daily wear and pressure. Just like tires or running shoes, they wear out faster with more use.

Signs Your Orthotics Need Replacing

If you notice any of the following, it may be time to schedule a checkup:

  • You feel your old foot pain returning

  • There are cracks, thinning, or distortion in the device

  • The orthotics feel flat or soft under pressure

  • They no longer fit properly in your shoes

  • You’ve had a major change in weight, activity, or health

Why Waiting Too Long Can Cost You

Worn-out orthotics don’t just stop helping—they can actually make things worse. Unsupported arches, poor shock absorption, and misalignment can all creep back in, causing:

  • Renewed plantar fasciitis

  • Heel, knee, or hip pain

  • Lower back discomfort

  • Worsening gait or balance

Many people delay replacing their orthotics because they assume they still “look fine.” But internal wear (even if not visible) can reduce function dramatically.

✅ Stay Ahead of the Pain

At Complete Feet, we recommend an annual orthotics check-up to:

  • Evaluate wear and tear

  • Adjust or refurbish existing orthotics (when possible)

  • Re-cast your feet if your needs have changed

If it’s time for a replacement, we’ll create new custom orthotics using our foam impression box method, ensuring a precise fit with no digital shortcuts.

Schedule Your Orthotics Check-Up

Don’t wait until your pain returns. A quick check-in could save you months of discomfort.
